1. Can engineering students study abroad?
Yes. There are many opportunities for engineering students to study, research, or complete an internship abroad. The College of Engineering strongly encourages incorporating an international experience into your engineering studies.

2. What types of international programs are offered for engineering students?
The College of Engineering has outlined several options on this Web site specifically designed for engineering students. There are summer programs, semester-long programs, and opportunities to study abroad for an entire academic year. Additionally, there are opportunities to volunteer abroad through Engineers without Borders, complete a paid internship, or conduct research. Your international experience can even start on campus by participating in some of our international organizations or by partnering up with an incoming international student.

3. Will I be able to graduate on time?
It is important to plan early and work with your academic advisor to ensure that you stay on track with your academic study plan. The opportunities for an international experience are endless, and your Academic Advisor as well as the International Programs Coordinator can work with you to find the best option.

4. Will it cost me more money to study abroad than to continue studying at SDSU?
Spending a semester abroad can actually be cheaper than spending a semester at SDSU! San Diego is a high cost of living area compared with other parts of the world, so there is a good chance you can find a lower cost destination. Compare some of the costs.

5. Will financial aid and scholarships apply to study abroad programs?
With some planning, students can qualify for various forms of financial assistance. State and federal financial aid can be used on approved study abroad programs. Take a look at the following links:
· Financial Aid
· Scholarships

6. I have not studied a foreign language, can I still study abroad?
Yes. Fortunately in the engineering field, English is a universal language. Many universities abroad (even where English is not the native language) offer many courses in English. Germany and Norway are just some of the countries where it is not uncommon to find entire engineering programs offered in English.

7. Will my credits transfer?
Prior to departure, students are required to complete an Academic Approval Form to ensure that they get full credit for courses taken abroad.

8. Is there a minimum GPA for study abroad?
GPA requirements vary by program, and there is a program for everyone. Obviously you will need to show that you are academically capable of succeeding in your coursework abroad. Often times, summer programs have less stringent GPA requirements.

9. Is it safe to travel abroad?
SDSU is committed to ensuring that students have a safe experience abroad. We are a member of the SAFETI (Safety Abroad First - Educational Travel Information) Consortium. The Consortium includes over 200 colleges and universities nationwide that are networked to promote health and safety for study abroad. Additionally, SDSU posts links to up-to-date resources on their Study Abroad Web site to educate students, parents, and faculty.

10. What do potential employers think of an international experience?
Competition is fierce in a globalized world, and in addition to a strong engineering background, employers look for well-rounded graduates. Click here to read what some employers have to say.

11. Do I have to be an undergraduate to study abroad?
No. International opportunities exist at all levels of academic study. The Norwegian University of Science and Technology offers Master’s programs taught in English with no tuition fees! Students also have opportunities to conduct research abroad.

12. Can I find a paid internship abroad?
Yes. Engineers are in demand around the world. For example, the DAAD program offers paid internships in Germany through their RISE program (Research Internships in Science and Engineering).

13. Do I have to take all engineering courses abroad?

Not at all. We encourage students to balance their course load. One of the great things about studying abroad is that you may have the opportunity to take courses that are not offered at SDSU, or take a course about the history and culture of the country you are studying in. You may find that although the coursework for your engineering courses will be standard, the teaching style, your classmates, and the course structure may offer a learning experience in itself. This all contributes to the new perspective we hope you will gain from studying abroad.

14. When is the best time to study abroad?
Students typically find that their 2nd and 3rd years are the best time to study abroad since it allows them to choose from a larger selection of classes. Once again it depends on your individual plan of study, so it is best to plan ahead.
