Summer in Italy - SDSU Engineering Sponsored Program

The "Summer in Italy " Engineering Study Abroad program offers a unique opportunity to learn about Italian culture while taking an engineering class at the University of Pisa! The five week program runs from May 19th to June 20th, 2008.

Locale:
Located in Southern Europe by the Mediterranean Sea, Italy has a fascinating history and a vibrant culture that is admired around the world. Pisa, a city of 90,000 people, is located in the Chianti wine region of Tuscany. The city boasts architectural masterpieces including the world famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, as well as many festivals, cafes, bars, museums, and churches that exude the essence of Italy and the warmth and energy of the Italian people. Pisa is also a perfect base for exploring the rest of Italy and Europe. A short train ride will land you in France, Monaco, Switzerland, Germany, or Austria.

Course Offerings:
“Applied Math for Engineers” (SDSU - E 280 - 3 units)
The instructor for this popular engineering course, also known as "Differential Equations" will be Dr. Mauro Pierucci who teaches this course regularly at SDSU.

“Italian Culture” (SDSU - GEN S 450 - 3 units)
This unique course will examine the culture and history of the Italian people and satisfies SDSU’s upper division cultural diversity requirement. The course will be taught in English by a professor from the University of Pisa.

Academic Notes:
The University of Pisa (Università di Pisa) is one of the largest and most renowned universities in Italy. It was founded in 1343 and currently educates 51,000 students. Notable engineering and science graduates include Galileo Galilei, Vito Volterra, and Bonaventura Cavalieri.

Cost:
The cost is $2,000 + airfare and tuition for SDSU Summer Session I. The cultural diversity class is an extra $500.

The program cost includes accommodation in a quality University of Pisa dorm room, meals at the university cantina, use of university facilities, rental bicycle, and airport transfer. If the cultural diversity class is taken, included are guided tours in English of Pisa, Florence, Lucca, Siena, and 4 days and 3 nights in Rome!

Deadlines:
Space is limited and on a first come first serve basis. To assure your place, please bring a check for $200.00 to Engineering Student Affairs, located in the Engineering building, room 209. Total program cost will be collected prior to departure. Scholarships are available.
