If SDSU were a country, Dipak Gupta, Ph.D., would be a national treasure.

The Distinguished Professor of political science has taught at San Diego State for 34 years, received every possible award the university bestows and even helped create one of the fastest-growing majors offered to undergraduate students.

On Monday, Gupta reflected on his personal and academic life as the sixth honoree in the annual Dr. Henry L. Janssen Last Lecture Series.

One question

Each year, the SDSU Honors Council invites a faculty member to answer one question in the form of a highly engaging lecture: "If this were your last time to address a group of students, what would you say to them?"

In fact, the audience for Gupta’s lecture comprised as many faculty and staff as students. All five previous honorees attended, including recently retired SDSU president, Stephen Weber.

Prolific career

Gupta spoke about his impoverished childhood in northern India; his political activism in Calcutta; the challenges of learning to write for academia as a University of Pittsburgh master’s degree student; his serendipitous employment as a professor at SDSU; and his prolific career.

He is the author of nine books and more than 100 articles in scholarly journals; the co-founder of SDSU’s undergraduate program in International Security and Conflict Resolution; and a principal investigator or co-principal investigator for dozens of research grants, including a current four-year National Science Foundation grant to develop new methodology for tracking ideas across the world through the Internet.
