Facilities, Computing and Development

The state of repair, or rather the lack thereof, makes the acquisition of a new building the greatest single need of the College of Engineering. The addition of two new wings to the existing Building is currently on the CSU list of new buildings to be added to the SDSU campus. Every effort should be made to expedite the process, and in particular to raise a significant amount of money to confirm our position in the queue, and to significantly upgrade the quality of the structure to be a monument to the engineering achievements of the San Diego high tech community. One or both wings provide an excellent naming opportunity.

To ensure state of the art laboratory and classroom facilities it is also necessary to refurbish the existing building, particularly as the research operation grows.

A significant portion of the new North Wing must be dedicated to the creation of an Integrated Design Center. This center will facilitate the design projects of all students from the freshmen through graduate level. The center should also provide a focus for the direct contact between the College and the local area industry.

New program development such as the undergraduate program in Chemical/Bio-Chemical Engineering will depend on the availability of new space.

Unique laboratories such as the Geotechnical (Soils), Concrete Materials and Power Systems laboratories should be housed in the new South Wing.

In the short term it is necessary to make the Engineering Building more attractive to prospective students. This can be established by adopting a number of simple measures:
