Our 12 SDSU Women in Engineering full-time faculty and 2 staff came together to collaboratively submit a proposal, titled “WE (Women in Engineering) Inspire: Reimagining Engineering Diversity (WIRED)” for the Equality Can't Wait Challenge, to address glaring gender disparities that remain in engineering fields.

SDSU’s top student researchers placed in three categories at the statewide competition, held this year in a virtual setting. Maricruz Carillo, a second-year doctoral student, placed first in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering category for her research on bone replacement techniques using ceramic materials and 3D printing.

In Spring, the WE Program faculty and staff wanted to create a virtual opportunity to stay connected with students during the pandemic. On April 30, 2020, the first WE Coffee Hour was hosted virtually through Zoom with a follow-up virtual WE Coffee Hour on May 22, 2020.

On February 20, 2020, Dr. Marta Miletic from the Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering Department presented at our second event of the WE Chat series. Speaking heavily about breaking through barriers, Dr. Miletic gave personal examples of the obstacles she has faced and had to overcome as a female engineer in industry and academia.
