Theresa M. Garcia, native of San Diego, CA earned a B.S. in Business Administration from San Diego State University (SDSU) in 1991 and a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership with an emphasis in Student Affairs in May 2009. She has worked in Higher Education since 1991 and has been the Director of the MESA (Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement) Engineering Program (MEP) at SDSU since 1997 where she assists students with their professional and personal growth along with their academic success in preparing them for the STEM industry and and/or for graduate school. She has received over $2 million in grants and contracts from the National Science Foundation (NSF), MESA, GTE foundation, PBS & J as well as scholarship funds and other donations from local companies who have been longtime supporters of MEP such as SONY, QUALCOMM, Hamilton Sundstrand, Raytheon, Northrop Grumman, Rick Engineering and others.

Assistant Dean Garcia has presented at several national and local conferences and has co-authored a paper that will be presented at the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE), Pacific Southwest Conference in 2011. She was instrumental in forming the San Diego MESA Alliance (SDMA) in the late 1990s, a pipeline of MESA programs covering students from grades 6 through 16. She is also currently Co-PI of an NSF grant in which she collaborates with community college partners of the SDMA at San Diego City Community College and Southwestern Community College. She serves the SDSU community very well with her dedication on several current and past committees including:

Assistant Dean Garcia has been recognized for her efforts by the SDSU community with a 2006 “Top 25Award”- given by the President of the University and by the National Association of Multi-Cultural Engineering Program Advocates (NAMEPA) with the “Outstanding MEP Award” in 2007. 

In her ‘other’ life, Assistant Dean Garcia loves to spend time with her family and friends. Being San Diego natives, she, her husband and three boys are fans of the Chargers, the Padres and of course the Aztecs. They enjoy camping and the outdoors. She is a lifetime member of the Alumni Association and a member of Phi Kappa Phi.
