William Nguyen is a Senior Systems Administrator III and the High-Performance Computing (HPC) Infrastructure Lead for the SDSU College of Engineering. With over two decades of dedicated service at San Diego State University, William bridges the gap between complex enterprise IT infrastructure and cutting-edge academic research, overseeing the deployment, automation, and reliability of core computing environments.

Core Responsibilities

• HPC & Cluster Management: Serves as the primary systems administrator and architect for the College of Engineering's high-performance computing environments, including the 92-node Fermi Cluster.

• Research & Faculty Support: Partners directly with engineering faculty and researchers to optimize computational workflows, manage SLURM workload scheduling, and support data-heavy simulations.

• OneIT Centralization: Leads strategic systems migration and administration, aligning departmental IT pipelines with SDSU’s centralized OneIT framework.

• Infrastructure Automation: Designs and maintains robust configuration management, automated deployment pipelines, and custom system telemetry using Ansible, Python, and Bash.

Background & Biography

William began his journey at SDSU as a Student Assistant for Instructional Technology Services (ITS). While working at ITS, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from SDSU. Upon graduating, he joined the team full-time as an Equipment Systems Specialist, designing advanced audio and video systems for the university’s Smart Classroom initiatives.

In 2013, William advanced to Information Technology Consultant for the College of Engineering. Over the years, his role has evolved from handling localized engineering IT needs to architecting enterprise-scale research infrastructure, cluster virtualization, and high-throughput storage networks that power the college's modern research division.
