Carter F. Truitt Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The Carter F. Truitt Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in 2021 by Mrs. Beverly (Truitt) Carr and Dr. David Carr in memory of Mrs. (Truitt) Carr's late father, Carter F. Truitt. Carter F. Truitt was not an engineer; but he could have been a great one. He was endlessly inventive and pragmatic with an entrepreneurial spirit, earning a significant US Patent before age 30 with only a high school diploma. He ran a successful bottled water business until forced to sell during the Depression. Later, he became a skilled builder, who in addition to many other construction projects, designed and built his family home in Del Cerro.
Mr. Truitt also devoted his life to serving his community and his country. He was a San Diego Police Officer for over 30 years. His law enforcement career was interrupted by WW II when he became Provost Marshal responsible for supervising military police throughout San Diego County. Subsequently, he was named Director of Military Intelligence for the Southwest Region encompassing southern California, Arizona, and New Mexico. He left the army at the end of the war with the rank of major and returned to his police duties, which he faithfully fulfilled until his retirement in 1970.
The Carter F. Truitt Memorial Endowed Scholarship will provide scholarship support to students pursuing degrees in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering. The first student scholarship will be awarded in the 2022-2023 academic year.
