Aldrete scholarship

Alfredo Aldrete and Sandra Pulido Aldrete MESA Endowed Scholarship

The Alfredo Aldrete and Sandra Pulido Aldrete MESA Endowed Scholarship was established in 2020 through the generous giving of SDSU alumni and loyal supporters, Mr. and Mrs. Alfredo and Sandra P. Aldrete. The endowed scholarship supports students in the SDSU Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) program in the College of Engineering. The Aldretes met at a MESA study group and they credit the MESA program for much of their academic success. They are pleased to support MESA so that other students can benefit from the program and become successful engineers. 
ASHRAE scholarship

ASHRAE San Diego Chapter Endowed Scholarship

The ASHRAE San Diego Chapter Endowed Scholarship was established in 1986. ASHRAE is a diverse organization dedicated to advancing the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration. This scholarship endowment provides support to students majoring in Mechanical, Environmental, or Construction Engineering and who have demonstrated academic distinction in one of three areas: thermodynamics, heat transfer, or fluid mechanics. The first student scholarship was awarded in 1987.

Bill E. Leonhard, Jr. Endowment Scholarship

The William E. Leonhard, Jr. Endowed Scholarship was established in 2000 through the generous giving of Mr. William E. Leonhard, Jr., College of Engineering alumnus and distinguished SDSU supporter. The purpose of this endowed scholarship fund is to award merit-based scholarships to attract and retain outstanding undergraduate and graduate students to the College of Engineering.

Bruce Urquhart & Jacqueline Clayton Endowed Scholarship

The Bruce Urquhart & Jacqueline Clayton Endowed Scholarship is utilized to support student veterans pursuing degrees in the College of Engineering. The endowment was established in May 2014 by Mr. Bruce Urquhart (SDSU alumnus and College of Engineering Faculty member) and Ms. Jacqueline Clayton. Bruce and Jacqueline both have backgrounds in transportation engineering, and Bruce has been a part-time faculty member at SDSU since 1992. Bruce and Jacqueline have admiration for student veterans and their excellent leadership capabilities, and as a scholarship recipient herself, Jacqueline feels it is important to support today’s students.

Byrl Phelps/San Diego Engineers Club Scholarship

The Byrl Phelps/San Diego Engineers Club Scholarship was established in 1999. The endowed scholarship fund provides support for students studying Civil Engineering in the College of Engineering.

Camille Speer Aerospace Engineering Scholarship

The Camille Speer Aerospace Engineering Endowed Scholarship fund was generously gifted by the Speer family, who was involved in the operation of the largest flight instruction facility on the West Coast. This fund provides support for annual scholarships to students studying Aerospace Engineering in the College of Engineering. The scholarship fund was established in 2004 and was first awarded in Fall of 2005.

Carol Forrest, P.E. Memorial Watershed Management Endowed Scholarship

The Carol Forrest, P.E. Memorial Watershed Management Endowed Scholarship was established in 2007 in memory of Carol Forrest, a Principal Engineer and SDSU alumnus, who made an extraordinary contribution to the watershed management field during her 28 years of professional experience. The scholarship is focused on encouraging students to enter and complete graduate studies in water resources related to storm water and urban runoff. Student scholarships will encourage graduate level research in improving how runoff is managed during construction, after land development (i.e., post-construction), in response to natural disasters (i.e., wildfires), or other events that affect water quality related to the protection or improvement of the health of receiving water systems and/or public property.

Carter F. Truitt Memorial Endowed Scholarship

The Carter F. Truitt Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in 2021 by Mrs. Beverly (Truitt) Carr and Dr. David Carr in memory of Mrs. (Truitt) Carr's late father, Carter F. Truitt. Carter F. Truitt was not an engineer; but he could have been a great one. He was endlessly inventive and pragmatic with an entrepreneurial spirit, earning a significant US Patent before age 30 with only a high school diploma. He ran a successful bottled water business until forced to sell during the Depression. Later, he became a skilled builder, who in addition to many other construction projects, designed and built his family home in Del Cerro.

Mr. Truitt also devoted his life to serving his community and his country. He was a San Diego Police Officer for over 30 years. His law enforcement career was interrupted by WW II when he became Provost Marshal responsible for supervising military police throughout San Diego County. Subsequently, he was named Director of Military Intelligence for the Southwest Region encompassing southern California, Arizona, and New Mexico. He left the army at the end of the war with the rank of major and returned to his police duties, which he faithfully fulfilled until his retirement in 1970.

The Carter F. Truitt Memorial Endowed Scholarship will provide scholarship support to students pursuing degrees in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering. The first student scholarship will be awarded in the 2022-2023 academic year.

Cheng-Mo Sun Memorial Endowed Scholarship

The Cheng-Mo Sun Memorial Endowed Scholarship provides support to first-time freshmen or transfer students majoring in Engineering. This endowed scholarship was gifted by Dr. Shu-Yun Chan, SDSU faculty emeritus, in memory of Mr. Cheng-Mo Sun in 1977.

Daphne Marschalk Fredrickson Memorial Endowed Scholarship

This endowed scholarship fund was named in memory of Mrs. Daphne Marschalk Fredrickson, College of Engineering alumnus and member of the Society of Women Engineers. The Daphne Marschalk Fredrickson Memorial Endowed scholarship is focused on providing scholarship support to students who are members of the Society of Women Engineers and are enrolled in the College of Engineering. The endowment was established in 2001 and the first student scholarship was awarded in the 2002-2003 academic year.

Darrell P. Asquith Memorial Endowed Scholarship

The Darrell P. Asquith Memorial Endowed Scholarship provides scholarship support to students within the College of Engineering. The endowed scholarship was established in 2009 and was named in memory of Darrell P. Asquith, SDSU alumnus attended.

DN Tanks Endowed Scholarship for NSBE, SHPE and SWE

Since 2020, DN Tanks has created three endowed shcolarship funds with their generous support. DN Tanks is an El Cajon, CA-based company with over 90 years of experience designing and constructing prestressed concrete liquid storage tanks. In its efforts to support a diverse engineering workforce, DN Tanks has directed this scholarship to specifically support students who are pursuing a degree in the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering, and that are members of the National Society of Black Engineers SDSU Student Chapter and/or involved with the SDSU Black Resource Center; members of the SDSU Society of Hispanic Engineers (SHPE); and members of the SDSU Society of Women Engineers (SWE).

Donald Grey Wilson Endowed Scholarship

The Donald Grey Wilson Endowed Scholarship was established in 1992 by Donald Grey Wilson, P.h.D., SDSU faculty emeritus. Dr. Wilson was a faculty member in the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department and was twice named "Most Influential Instructor" by SDSU students during his time with the College. The Donald Grey Wilson Endowment provides annual scholarship support for undergraduate students in the College of Engineering. Each scholarship awarded from this endowment will have at a minimum a value of $8,000.

Earl and Christina Myers Endowed Scholarship

The Earl and Christina Myers Endowed Scholarship was established in 2003 to provide scholarship support to undergraduate students majoring in Civil or Environmental Engineering. The Myers family generously gifted this endowment in memory of Mr. Earl Myers, who was an SDSU alumnus and attended a two-year pre-engineering program at SDSU in the 1930’s. The first student scholarship was awarded in the 2004-2005 academic year.

Engineering Faculty Memorial Endowed Scholarship

The Engineering Faculty Memorial Endowed Scholarship fund was established in 1996 to provide support for scholarships to students in the College of Engineering. Engineering faculty members generously gifted this endowed fund in memory of the loss of their colleagues Dr. Chen Liang, Dr. Preston Lowrey and Dr. Constantinos Lyrintzis. This scholarship remembers and celebrates the noble work of education that Drs. Liang, Lowrey, and Lyrintzis devoted their careers to.

Georgia Griffiths, G2 Software Systems Endowed Scholarship

The Georgia Griffiths, G2 Software Systems Endowed Scholarship was established in July 2018 to provide scholarship support to students in the College of Engineering. Ms. Georgia Griffiths is a loyal supporter of SDSU and the President of G2 Software Systems, the first woman-owned defense contractor in San Diego, CA. The scholarship was awarded for the first time in the 2019-2020 academic year.

Jack R. Filanc Endowed Scholarship

The Jack R. Filanc Endowed Scholarship provides scholarship support to students in the Construction Engineering program within the College of Engineering. This endowed scholarship was generously gifted by the Filanc family in honor of Mr. Jack R. Filanc, founder of J.R. Filanc Construction Company. The Filanc family are recognized as leaders in the field of quality construction, and as loyal supporters of SDSU, named the J.R. Filanc Construction Engineering and Management Program in the College of Engineering. The endowment was established in 2005 and the first student scholarship was awarded in the 2011-2012 academic year.
Dr. Supernak

Dr. Janusz Supernak Award for Excellence

In 2017 SDSU ASCE student leaders established "The Supernak Excellence Award" named after their faculty advisor, Dr. Janusz Supernak.  Dr. Supernak has served as SDSU ASCE advisor for over two decades. This award has since been given to the top 5 SDSU ASCE student contributors. In 2021 Dr. Supernak stepped forward and decided to establish an endowment for an annual monetary award given to the top student out of the five finalists. 
 
On behalf of the College of Engineering, we are pleased to announce that Dr. Supernak, long time Department Chair of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering has made a $50,000 gift to fund an endowment that will make the annual monetary award in perpetuity  The award recognizes an outstanding student in the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering.
 
Dr. Supernak is a long standing champion of philanthropy for the College of Engineering as he has been instrumental in facilitating the Filanc family naming for the J.R. Filanc CEM Program, the Stephen and Lynne Doyle Endowment gift for CEM and the William E. Leonhard Jr. Chair for Environmental Engineering.

Mark E. Filanc Endowed Scholarship

The Mark E. Filanc Endowed Scholarship provides scholarship support to students in the Construction Engineering program within the College of Engineering.  This endowed scholarship was generously gifted by the Filanc family in honor of Mr. Mark E. Filanc, CEO of J.R. Filanc Construction Company and SDSU faculty member. The Filanc family are loyal supporters of SDSU and named the J.R. Filanc Construction Engineering and Management Program in the College of Engineering. The endowment was established in 2005 and the first student scholarship was awarded in the 2011-2012 academic year.
Hanlon/Garcia MESA Endowed Scholarship

Hanlon/Garcia MESA Endowed Scholarship for Engineering

Carlos (Civil Engineering '97, '00) and Gail Gonzalez (Liberal Studies '96, '97) established the Hanlon/Garcia MESA Endowed Scholarship for College of Engineering students in the MESA program.  They established it to honor Raymond Hanlon (Gail's father) and Maria de la Luz Garcia (Carlos’s mom).  Grateful for their SDSU education they are humbled with the opportunity to give back to the next generation of Aztecs.

McMahon Chi Epsilon Scholarship

The McMahon Chi Epsilon Scholarship was established in 1999 to provide support to students who are members of the Chi Epsilon Student Chapter in the Civil, Construction & Environmental Engineering Department of the College of Engineering. This endowed scholarship fund was generously gifted through the McMahon Family Trust. Chi Epsilon is a civil engineering honor society dedicated to maintaining and promoting the status of civil engineering as an ideal profession. The SDSU Chapter of Chi Epsilon was established in 1967.

Michael R. Niggli Endowed Scholarship

The Michael R. Niggli Endowed Scholarship provides scholarship support to undergraduate students pursuing a degree in the College of Engineering, with a preference for students who are active members in the SDSU MESA program. This endowment was established in 2013 by Mr. Michael R. Niggli, an SDSU Electrical Engineering alumnus and generous supporter of the College of Engineering. The first student scholarships were awarded from this endowed scholarship fund in the 2014-2015 academic year.

Paul Stuverud MESA Endowed Scholarship

The Paul Stuverud MESA Endowed Scholarship was established in 2019 by Paul Stuverud, alumnus and long-time supporter of the College of Engineering. This endowment provides scholarship support to students in the SDSU MESA Program in the College of Engineering. Paul’s over 30 year engineering career was spent in San Diego and he feels it is important to support first generation and underserved students in their pursuit to become engineers.

The Peter John Filanc Leadership Award provides scholarship support to students in the Civil, Construction & Environmental Engineering Department within the College of Engineering. This endowed scholarship award was generously gifted by the Filanc family in honor of Mr. Peter John Filanc, former CEO of J.R. Filanc Construction Company and loyal SDSU supporter. As a dedicated philanthropist, Peter was a supporter of education and had a passion for mentoring and inspiring young engineers. The endowment was established in 2005 and the first student scholarship was awarded in the 2011-2012 academic year.

Preston Lowrey III Memorial Endowed Scholarship

The Preston Lowrey III Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in 1996 to provide scholarship support to students majoring in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering. This scholarship was established in memory of Mr. Preston Lowrey III, who at the time of his death was pursuing research in alternative energy resources as an Associate Professor at SDSU. Preston graduated from Duke University in 1974 with a Bachelor’s degree in oceanography and geology, then pursued mechanical engineering at NC State University where he graduated with his graduate degree in 1984. After serving as an Assistant Professor at Ohio State University in 1985-86, Preston came to SDSU to pursue his area of research. Preston was an avid explorer, loved the outdoors and enjoyed working with students. Preston’s appreciation for the environment drove his interest in research for alternative energy resources and he was motivated to try and make the world a better place through his research.

Rick Engineering Company Endowed Scholarship

The Rick Engineering Company Endowed Scholarship was established in 2021 by the generous support of Rick Engineering Company, an engineering, planning and design firm headquartered in San Diego, CA. This endowed scholarship provides support to students pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering in the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering. The first student scholarship will be awarded in academic year 2026-2027.

Richard and Christine Brady, Helen Coelho and Ostrowski Brothers Endowed Scholarship for Engineering

The Richard and Christine Brady, Helen Coelho and Ostrowski Brothers Endowed Scholarship for Engineering was established by Rick Brady P.E. BCEE (Civil Engineering '80) as a way to honor family members and to educate the next generation of engineers. Brady founded Richard Brady & Associates. He is a registered professional engineer and Board Certified Environmental Engineer (BCEE) in water and wastewater design. He is the 2024 College of Engineering Alumnus of Distinction Recipient.
Ramón and Gracie Riesgo

Ramón and Gracie Riesgo Endowed Scholarship for Engineering

San Diego State University alumni Ramón (Aerospace Engineering ' 91) and Gracie Riesgo (Public Administration '88) are Aztecs for Life. They choose to give back to SDSU by establishing the Ramón and Gracie Riesgo Endowed Scholarship for Engineering as a way to say thank you for all that SDSU has done for them and to support the next generation of Aztecs. 

The couple met during a fateful night at a fundraiser for Gracie’s club, MABA (Mexican American Business Association) and the rest is history. Since graduation they've continued their involvement in student organizations centered around empowering and supporting Latino students on campus.

Through the generous support of the S. Falck Nielsen Family, the S. Falck Nielsen Family Scholarship was established in 1982 to provide scholarships to entering freshmen in the College of Engineering.

San Diego Chapter of Women in Defense Endowed Scholarship

The San Diego Chapter of the Women in Defense (WID) organization cultivates and supports the advancement and recognition of women working in San Diego’s defense industry. Through one of its initiatives to support women who are working toward careers in defense and national security, the San Diego Chapter of WID established an endowed scholarship fund to provide student scholarships within the College of Engineering. The endowed fund was established in 2009 and the first student scholarship was awarded in the 2010-2011 academic year.
