ASHRAE San Diego Chapter Endowed Scholarship
The ASHRAE San Diego Chapter Endowed Scholarship was established in 1986. ASHRAE is
a diverse organization dedicated to advancing the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation,
air conditioning and refrigeration. This endowment provides scholarship support to
students majoring in Mechanical, Environmental, or Construction Engineering and who
have demonstrated academic distinction in one of three areas: thermodynamics, heat
transfer, or fluid mechanics. The first student scholarship was awarded in 1987.

Bill E. Leonhard, Jr. Scholarship Endowment
The William E. Leonhard, Jr. Scholarship Endowment was established in 2000 through
the generous giving of Mr. William E. Leonhard, Jr., College of Engineering alumnus
and distinguished SDSU supporter. The purpose of this endowment is to award merit-based
scholarships to attract and retain outstanding undergraduate and graduate students
to the College of Engineering.

Bruce Urquhart & Jacqueline Clayton Endowed Scholarship
Bruce Urquhart & Jacqueline Clayton Endowed Scholarship is utilized to support student
veterans pursuing degrees in the College of Engineering. The endowment was established
in May 2014 by Mr. Bruce Urquhart (SDSU alumnus and College of Engineering Faculty
member) and Ms. Jacqueline Clayton. Bruce and Jacqueline both have backgrounds in
transportation engineering, and Bruce has been a part-time faculty member at SDSU
since 1992. Bruce and Jacqueline have admiration for student veterans and their excellent
leadership capabilities, and as a scholarship recipient herself during her time in
college, Jacqueline feels it is important to support today’s students.
The Byrl Phelps/San Diego Engineers Club Endowment was established in 1999. The endowment provides support for scholarships to students studying Civil Engineering in the College of Engineering.
Camille Speer Endowed Scholarship
The Camille Speer Endowed Scholarship fund was generously gifted by the Speer family,
who was involved in the operation of the largest flight instruction facility on the
West Coast. This fund provides support for annual scholarships to students studying
Aerospace Engineering in the College of Engineering. The endowment was established
in 2004 and was first awarded in Fall of 2005.
Carol Forrest, P.E. Memorial Watershed Management Endowed Scholarship
The Carol Forrest, P.E. Memorial Watershed Management Endowed Scholarship was established
in 2007 in memory of Carol Forrest, a Principal Engineer and SDSU alumnus, who made
an extraordinary contribution to the watershed management field during her 28 years
of professional experience.
The scholarship is focused on encouraging students to enter and complete graduate
studies in water resources related to storm water and urban runoff. Student scholarships
will encourage graduate level research in improving how runoff is managed during construction,
after land development (i.e., post-construction), in response to natural disasters
(i.e., wildfires), or other events that affect water quality related to the protection
or improvement of the health of receiving water systems and/or public property.
Cheng-Mo Sun Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The Cheng-Mo Sun Memorial Endowed Scholarship provides support to first-time freshmen
or transfer students majoring in Engineering. This endowed scholarship was gifted
by Dr. Shu-Yun Chan, SDSU faculty emeritus, in memory of Mr. Cheng-Mo Sun in 1977.
Daphne Marschalk Fredrickson Memorial Endowed Scholarship
This endowed scholarship fund was named in memory of Mrs. Daphne Marschalk Fredrickson,
College of Engineering alumnus and member of the Society of Women Engineers. The Daphne
Marschalk Fredrickson Memorial Endowed scholarship is focused on providing scholarship
support to students who are members of the Society of Women Engineers and are enrolled
in the College of Engineering. The endowment was established in 2001 and the first
student scholarship was awarded in the 2002-2003 academic year.
Darrell P. Asquith Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The Darrell P. Asquith Memorial Endowed Scholarship provides scholarship support to
students within the College of Engineering. The endowed scholarship was established
in 2009 and was named in memory of Darrell P. Asquith, SDSU alumnus attended.
Donald Grey Wilson Endowed Scholarship
The Donald Grey Wilson Endowed Scholarship was established in 1992 by Donald Grey
Wilson, P.h.D., SDSU faculty emeritus. Dr. Wilson was a faculty member in the Electrical
& Computer Engineering Department and was twice named "Most Influential Instructor"
by SDSU students during his time with the College. The Donald Grey Wilson Endowment
provides annual scholarship support for undergraduate students in the College of Engineering.
Each scholarship awarded from this endowment will have at a minimum a value of $8,000.
The Earl and Christina Myers Endowed Scholarship was established in 2003 to provide scholarship support to undergraduate students majoring in Civil or Environmental Engineering. The Myers family generously gifted this endowment in memory of Mr. Earl Myers, who was an SDSU alumnus and attended a two-year pre-engineering program at SDSU in the 1930’s. The first student scholarship was awarded in the 2004-2005 academic year.
The Engineering Faculty Endowed Scholarship fund was established in 1996 to provide support for scholarships to students in the College of Engineering. This endowment is supported through generous gifts from faculty members.
Georgia Griffiths, G2 Software Systems Endowed Scholarship
The Georgia Griffiths, G2 Software Systems Endowed Scholarship was established in
July 2018 to provide scholarship support to students in the College of Engineering.
Ms. Georgia Griffiths is a loyal supporter of SDSU and the President of G2 Software
Systems, the first woman-owned defense contractor in San Diego, CA. The scholarship
was awarded for the first time in the 2019-2020 academic year.
Jack R. Filanc Endowed Scholarship
The Jack R. Filanc Endowed Scholarship provides scholarship support to students in
the Construction Engineering program within the College of Engineering. This endowed
scholarship was generously gifted by the Filanc family in honor of Mr. Jack R. Filanc,
founder of J.R. Filanc Construction Company. The Filanc family are recognized as leaders
in the field of quality construction, and as loyal supporters of SDSU, named the J.R.
Filanc Construction Engineering and Management Program in the College of Engineering.
The endowment was established in 2005 and the first student scholarship was awarded
in the 2011-2012 academic year.
Mark E. Filanc Endowed Scholarship
The Mark E. Filanc Endowed Scholarship provides scholarship support to students in
the Construction Engineering program within the College of Engineering. This endowed
scholarship was generously gifted by the Filanc family in honor of Mr. Mark E. Filanc,
CEO of J.R. Filanc Construction Company and SDSU faculty member. The Filanc family
are loyal supporters of SDSU and named the J.R. Filanc Construction Engineering and
Management Program in the College of Engineering. The endowment was established in
2005 and the first student scholarship was awarded in the 2011-2012 academic year.
McMahon Chi Epsilon Student Chapter Endowment
The McMahon Chi Epsilon Student Chapter Endowment was established in 1999 to provide
scholarship support to students who are members of Chi Epsilon in the Civil, Construction
& Environmental Engineering Department of the College of Engineering. This endowment
was generously gifted through the McMahon Family Trust. Chi Epsilon is a civil engineering
honor society dedicated to maintaining and promoting the status of civil engineering
as an ideal profession. The SDSU Chapter of Chi Epsilon was established in 1967.
Michael R. Niggli Endowed Scholarship
The Michael R. Niggli Endowed Scholarship provides scholarship support to undergraduate
students pursuing a degree in the College of Engineering, with a preference for students
who are active members in the SDSU Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA)
program. This endowment was established in 2013 by Mr. Michael R. Niggli, an SDSU
Electrical Engineering alumnus and generous supporter of the College of Engineering.
The first student scholarships were awarded from this endowed fund in the 2014-2015
academic year.
Paul Stuverud MESA Endowed Scholarship
The Paul Stuverud MESA Endowed Scholarship was established in 2019 by Paul Stuverud,
alumnus and long-time supporter of the College of Engineering. This endowment provides
scholarship support to students in the SDSU MESA Program in the College of Engineering.
Paul’s over 30 year engineering career was spent in San Diego and he feels it is important
to support first generation and underserved students in their pursuit to become engineers.
Peter John Filanc Leadership Award Endowment
The Peter John Filanc Leadership Award provides scholarship support to students in
the Civil, Construction & Environmental Engineering Department within the College
of Engineering. This endowed scholarship award was generously gifted by the Filanc
family in honor of Mr. Peter John Filanc, former CEO of J.R. Filanc Construction Company
and loyal SDSU supporter. As a dedicated philanthropist, Peter was a supporter of
education and had a passion for mentoring and inspiring young engineers. The endowment
was established in 2005 and the first student scholarship was awarded in the 2011-2012
academic year.
Preston Lowrey III Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The Preston Lowrey III Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in 1996 to provide
scholarship support to students majoring in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering. This
scholarship was established in memory of Mr. Preston Lowrey III, who at the time of
his death was pursuing research in alternative energy resources as an Associate Professor
at SDSU. Preston graduated from Duke University in 1974 with a Bachelor’s degree in
oceanography and geology, then pursued mechanical engineering at NC State University
where he graduated with his graduate degree in 1984. After serving as an Assistant
Professor at Ohio State University in 1985-86, Preston came to SDSU to pursue his
area of research. Preston was an avid explorer, loved the outdoors and enjoyed working
with students. Preston’s appreciation for the environment drove his interest in research
for alternative energy resources and he was motivated to try and make the world a
better place through his research.
Through the generous support of the S. Falck Nielsen Family, the S. Falck Nielsen Family Scholarship Endowment was established in 1982 to provide scholarships to entering freshmen in the College of Engineering.
The San Diego Chapter of the Women in Defense (WID) organization cultivates and supports the advancement and recognition of women working in San Diego’s defense industry. Through one of its initiatives to support women who are working toward careers in defense and national security, the San Diego Chapter of WID established an endowed scholarship fund to provide student scholarships within the College of Engineering. The endowed fund was established in 2009 and the first student scholarship was awarded in the 2010-2011 academic year.
