Endowed chair established in construction management
Nov 10Reza Akhavian, an associate professor in civil, construction, and environmental engineering at San Diego State University and an expert on the integration of innovative digital, robotic and AI systems in construction engineering, has been named the inaugural recipient of an endowed chair.
Major NSF grant seeks to fill 'skills gap' in construction engineering
Sep 8Walk past a construction job site and from the outside it looks as old school as ever: bulldozers digging, cranes lifting steel and glass, mixers pouring cement. Behind the scenes, however, the building industry in many cases draws upon many of the same data-driven technologies that have transformed health care, transportation and other sectors of the world economy.
Research looks at the math behind hypersonic flight
Jun 24Two faculty members in the SDSU aerospace engineering department developed an improved model of predicting the interacting particle systems in detonation waves, an issue of interest to the U.S. Air Force.
Graduate’s ‘unwavering determination’ zeroes in on biotech research
Feb 24SDSU’s R1 classification rests on the work of such students as Daniel Valencia and his mentors, looking into brain activity and computer interfaces.
SDSU professor’s mission to land humans on Mars is his holy grail of space exploration
Feb 3Ping Lu, professor of aerospace engineering at San Diego State University, will deliver the 34th Annual Albert W. Johnson Distinguished Lecture on March 12.
New engineering master’s program sees its first graduate ― on a fast track
Dec 17As an inquisitive kid growing up in Murrieta, Corey Taylor had an early start in electronics by taking apart family TV remotes and other small devices to see “what’s really going on behind that button”: microcontrollers, LEDs, resistors, capacitors.
Aztec alumnus leads NASA’s historic Europa Clipper mission
Oct 21Aerospace alumnus Jordan Evans (‘93), is reaching for the stars in his career – quite literally. As project manager for NASA’s groundbreaking Europa Clipper mission, Evans is leading the first-ever detailed study of Europa, one of Jupiter’s moons.
$2.8 million NSF grant will expand AI education and research opportunities for students
Jul 2The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF)’s ExpandAI program last week awarded San Diego State University a $2.8 million, four-year grant to enhance the existing artificial intelligence infrastructure, education and research capacity and prepare students for careers in AI.
SDSU College of Engineering students showcased inventive projects at Senior Design Day
May 25San Diego State University College of Engineering seniors are prepared to envision, design, and build a better world. During the 2024 Senior Design Day, held May 1 at Viejas Arena, senior design teams presented innovative engineering projects to upwards of 2,300 attendees. In the intensive, two-semester Senior Design Course, students collaborate as an engineering team to identify and solve real-world problems, from conception to implementation. With support from sponsors, mentors, advisors, and faculty, the students put their technical knowledge, communication, and collaborative skills into practice. The students showcased various projects from growing plants on the moon and designing non-invasive health monitoring sensors to developing power line wrapping technology to prevent wildfires.
Grad Profile: From camouflage to cap and gown
May 24Critical thinking. Adaptability. Leadership. Teamwork. Perseverance. Aerospace engineering and serving in the U.S. Marines have a lot more in common than meets the eye. After serving nine and a half years in the military, Christopher Phillips (‘24) enrolled in San Diego State University to become an engineer. Five years later, he marched across the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier at SDSU’s Inaugural Veteran Commencement Ceremony holding a degree in aerospace engineering, focusing on aerodynamics.
