Reza Akhavian, an associate professor in civil, construction, and environmental engineering at San Diego State University and an expert on the integration of innovative digital, robotic and AI systems in construction engineering, has been named the inaugural recipient of an endowed chair.

Walk past a construction job site and from the outside it looks as old school as ever: bulldozers digging, cranes lifting steel and glass, mixers pouring cement. Behind the scenes, however, the building industry in many cases draws upon many of the same data-driven technologies that have transformed health care, transportation and other sectors of the world economy.

Two faculty members in the SDSU aerospace engineering department developed an improved model of predicting the interacting particle systems in detonation waves, an issue of interest to the U.S. Air Force.

SDSU’s R1 classification rests on the work of such students as Daniel Valencia and his mentors, looking into brain activity and computer interfaces.

Ping Lu, professor of aerospace engineering at San Diego State University, will deliver the 34th Annual Albert W. Johnson Distinguished Lecture on March 12.
